Description

A wearable multi-purpose rope device for 10.5 – 11 mm rope that handles hauling, lowering, descent, ascent and belay for rescue and rope-access teams.

The CLUTCH was developed jointly by CMC and Harken to let the technical rope professional do more with less equipment. It moves between anchor-based systems and personal use, so one device can serve a number of rigging tasks.

This 11 mm version in grey is made in the USA and is built for rope of 10.5 – 11 mm.

It carries NFPA General Use (G) certification as a descent control device and as a belay device for ø 10.5 – 11 mm rope, alongside ANSI/ASSE Z359.4-2013 and CE marking to EN 12841: 2024/C, EN 341: 2011/2A and EN 15151-1: 2012/8.

Key features

  • One wearable tool — A single wearable tool covers hauling, controlled lowering, personal descent, ascending, belaying and Twin Tension Rope Systems.
  • Replaces eight items — It takes the place of 8 pieces of traditional equipment: pulley, rescue rack, anchor plate, load release strap, prusik cord and 3 carabiners.
  • Hauling efficiency — It delivers up to 38% higher efficiency in hauling and ascending than a cam-style device, which reduces changeovers.
  • No load transfer — It changes between hauling and lowering, or between ascent and descent, without the load having to be transferred.
  • Twin-tensioned lines — Main and belay lines can be twin-tensioned in mirrored or nested configurations (Double CLUTCH Technique).
  • Double-latched side plate — Rope loading and unloading is secured by a double-latched side plate that is independent of the device's attachment point.
  • Ratcheting stainless sheave — A stainless steel ratcheting and rotating sheave gives efficient, audible auto-locking progress capture.
  • Anti-Panic and force limiting — Anti-Panic brake and force limiting features provide operational safety and overload protection.
  • Integrated becket — An integrated becket allows direct connection of mechanical advantage components.
  • Progressive control handle — The control handle has a large sweet spot for smooth, progressive lowering and descent control.

Typical applications

  • Hauling and controlled lowering in rescue systems
  • Personal descent and ascent in rope access work
  • Belaying and twin-tensioned main and belay line set-ups
